Heart pine is the wood taken from the middle of the Southern Pine this is the densest part of the tree. The Janka rating is 1225 Oak is 1290 so it is softer than oak. This makes pine a little easier to scratch and dent. Although this wood is easier to scratch and dent it gives this wood character.
